my cd-r drive is not self recognised as a recordable device ?

Go to Device Manager & see if the drive is functioning generally. If not try the repair option. To find device superintendent in XP budge to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager.

If that doesn't work go to the manufactuers network site and update the driver and firnware.
Windows views-uses - any cdrw as a normal cd rom, until the software, (not a moment ago the drivers) tell it otherwise...so I would delete the burner program, and reinstall it ..
If you be using XP's built in cd writing phase double-click on 'my computer' which is usually on your desktop then right click on the cd-r drive and select properties.

On the pane that pops up select the recording tab and next make sure that in that is a tick in the box - see cd recording for this drive. Press OK to squirrel away changes
