Your DVD player may only know how to recognize DVD + R or DVD - R or IT might not be capable of read DVD9, check you manual or the sony website, to see what formats and speeds of DVD's your player will adopt.
Your computer may be low on virtual memory or RAM. Try removing any unimportant files, programs, anything. Or hang around for your computer to detect the matter and tolerate it automatically expand memory from microsoft.com
Ther can be two different causes :

1) hardware breakdown. DVD drive have two separate lasers one for CDs and one for DVDs. If DVD one fail it can cause problem close to that.

2) Software problem.

In order to audition what is the problem I'm using bootable DVD - if computer boots from the dvd (you have to set boot demand in BIOS) - the problem is near Windows - restoring to earlier restore point can minister to - or windows reinstall lying on the existing system (refreshes the files and replaces damaged ones).

You can also try to use different types of DVDs - facts or movie. Sometimes default program for playing DVD content is dog-eared and freezes computer.
If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem beside device drivers, hardware or software.
