i whent to device overseer and it had this (!) contained by front of each drive
i whent within the drives and it said.
(windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.
the driver may be corrupted or missing) (code 39)
my cd drive is missing from (my computer) how can i fix this?
Try adaptation another IDE cable and see, because IDE cable may spoilt even we think is impossible.
Or transport out your CD-rom and pit it in another laptop and test it, if it works, afterwards your operating system is the source of the problem.
I have a dell chat log abput this problem pm for the log if you want it. But as to this problem only just uninstall and install the drive

Your driver is part of windows and is just a generic driver, to fix this you need to edit the registry as shown on this post about fixing the dvd drive
